Preliminary Task

PROPOSAL
I am going to be aiming my magazine at teenagers aged 16 to 19 who are in college.

My magazine is going to be about all the things that go on within the college, including any achievements students have made, deals in the college shop or canteen, and any new information like days the college is closed, or new enrichment sign-ups.

Some ideas for titles of the magazine include "College", "Achievable" and "Right Direction". I didn't really like most of these because they dont seem very interesting and I don't think many people would be attracted to buy it. I finally decided on the mast head "On Route" because it's short and snappy, and it will make people want to read it, to see what it is about. It also links to the theme of a college magazine, as it implies that it includes information to keep you on track when you are in college.

The font that I would like to use for my title is "Onyx" which is very bold and easy to read. I would also like to use this because it looks a lot like what has been used in proper magazine covers. Another font I would like to use could be "Bernard MT Condensed" because it matches with the Masthead quite well.

Some ideas for tag lines for my college magazine:- "studying your way to success"

At the beginning of every month this magazine will be published, so it will be twelve times every year. It will be used to show all the information for the rest of that month, including auditions, charity days, days off, or any other information.

I will have an image of a student stood facing the camera, or partaking in an activity like completing coursework or socialising. It will also need to be bright, so as to catch the attention of the reader. I will get this picture by asking someone in my class, or a group of people in my class to pose for me to capture the image.

The dimensions of the cover will be that of a standard A4 sheet of paper, which is 297mm X 210mm. This is because it will be easy to carry around and easy to store when you aren't reading it. It would also be good because it will be easy to make everything fit onto the page without it being so small that you can't read it.

This is the final image that I have decided to use for my magazine cover. I want to use this one because it is quite bright and includes quite nice colours. I also want to use this one because the student is stood facing the camera, yet looking off to the side. This could be used well to show that he is looking at the left third of the magazine cover to read the advertisements of what is inside. Furthermore this could be used to entice the reader more because they will be able to see that, what is inside is obviously worth reading.

This is my first draft of the magazine. I like that the masthead matches to the colour of the shirt and I think I may make it an ongoing theme throughout the magazine that the clothes will be matched by the masthead. I do not like what the starbursts. I think the reason for this is because the colour doesn't really go very well with the colour of the mast head. I think I will change
this and make a theme of dark and pale reds on the page, rather than trying to match the colour of the lanyard.
Finally, the banner on the left hand side of the page which is the left third, looks like a chat magazine, very relaxed, which is in complete contrast to how the rest of the magazine looks. I am going to change this by possibly taking away the backing colour and just have it as words. If I do this I will need to change the font colour because it will not be able to be seen against the light background.

Having made the changes I mentioned above I am much happier with the result. I have deleted the banner on the left hand side and changed the font colour to a colour that suits the theme of the rep shirt. I also applied this theme to the starburst and lower banner. This helped to make the bold words stand out a lot more.

For my contents page, I will continue the colour theme of dark reds and pink. I would also include images that are relevant to the cover lines that I have used on my front page.

This is my final contents draft. I have used the same font as I used on my front cover. The word "Contents" is in Onyx and the actual typing is in Bernard MT Condensed. I have used the layout such that I have the contents of the magazine running down the right hand side of the page which will be complemented by four images which will have something to do with at least one of the pages that I have spoken about in the contents. The first piece of writing is about deals in the college shop so I will have a picture of a collection of books and stationary, accompanied by a sale star burst to tell the reader that there is a sale there, and will get them more interested automatically. The next point is about studying. For this I would put alongside this piece of writing is an image of someone doing some coursework with their headphones in. In order to suggest that this is one of the many ways that can help you to study more effectively. I would make this photo link with "lockers" as well because I can show this easily by having some folders piled on the table next to the student, to suggest that you have to carry around the folders if you don't get a locker, hence giving the reader motivation to find out how to get a locker, therefore getting them to read on. The third image is going to be linked to the theatre, so either someone dancing or an image from a recent play. I would do this to amuse the readers, and give them the idea that they have the chance to do that if they look further, which they do. The final image will be of the food in the courtyard cafe, reminding them of the food that they can get, enticing them to buy the magazine and then get the vouchers that are inside.

To improve this I would make the background a little bit more interesting. I would do this by maybe putting different shapes or shading onto the background, nothing too big as it would detract the attention from the main content of this page. I would need to learn how to change transparency of shapes within InDesign because I don't yet know how to do this and the shapes will need to be more transparent because you still need to be able to read the text.

IPC Case Study

History of IPC Media
·       The international publishing corporation Ltd, was formed in 1963 after the joining of the UK’s three biggest magazine publishers. George Newnes, Odhams Press and Fleetway publications.
·       These joined with the Mirror Group to for IPC properly.
·       IPC Magazines was created in 1968.
·       The first three magazine publishers mentioned above, each have their own history having been established in 1881, 1880, 1890.
·       The titles launched in the late 19th century are still being published today, underneath the IPC umbrella.

Magazines Today
·       At the moment, IPC mainly have sporting magazines
·       They have only one teen magazine
·       Their second most popular category is Woman’s weekly magazines
·       They have a total of 79 magazines that they publish.
o   3 Country Pursuits and Equestrian- an example of this is “Country Life”.
o   4 Fashion and beauty- an example of this is “InStyle”.
o   8 Home Interest- an example of this is “Beautiful Homes”.
o   5 Lifestyle magazines- an example of one is “Essentials”.
o   30 Sport and Leisure Magazines- One example is “Cycle Sport”.
o   1 Teen- “Teen Now”
o   5 TV Entertainment- “Soap life”
o   14 Women’s Weekly’s- “Chat”.
o   5 Young Men and Music- “NME”.

Advertising audiences
·       Mass Market Women-
·       In every home the women of the household make multiple purchase decisions every day. This makes mass-market women an ideal advertising audience for them.
·       IPC is the UKs leading consumer publisher for Mass Market women. Their weekly magazines and websites include inspiration, advice, celebrity gossip, information, and real life. This appeals to women and mums of all ages and attitudes.
·       IPC Connect represents IPC’s portfolio of Women’s weeklies and TV Magazines.
·       Upmarket men-
·       These types of people are generally adventurous, busy and energetic people. They embrace life for its highs, they follow their passions habitually and they seek out information and advice to enhance their enjoyment of it.
·       IPC Inspire is used to reach this audience.
·       Upmarket Women-
·       These women are confident and exact in what they do, they generally have a wide variety of interests, IPC Media caters for them through a portfolio of media brands, which are printed and online.
·       Young Men-
·       Men who enjoy listening to music like the Arctic Monkeys and Lucy Pinder.
What types of magazine and target audiences has IPC been associated with over the years?
·       From only the 1800’s it has been linked to –
o   Horse & Hound
o   Shooting times
o   Yachting World
o   Amateur Gardening
o   Cycling Weekly
o   Amateur photographer
o   The railway magazine
·       The target audiences from the beginning include middle-aged men, from the beginning it has been associated with targeting people with an interest in a wide variety of sports, cultural interests and photography.
·       This finally shows that it is aiming most of its magazines at middle class men. The reason for this is because fairly wealthy audiences usually watched the sports, in this time.
·       In the new century many more new titles became part of IPC media and from the 1900’s to 1960’s it collaborated with-
o   Yachting Monthly
o    Motor Boat
o   Woman’s Weekly
o    Golf Monthly Woman
o    Home Woman’s
o    Own Woman Angler’s
·        This wide variety of magazine shows that IPC has been connected with a vast range of magazines. It also presents who the IPC target audience is as well. It is clear that the IPC has continued to target audiences with an interest in sports through the use of various sports magazines such as ‘Golf Monthly and Motor Boat. IPC has also chooses to target woman which is apparent through the use of women magazines such as ‘Woman.’ Then from the 1970’s to the 2000’s IPC continued to grow collaborated with more titles such as: Sporting Gun Motor Caravan Wedding & Home Country Homes & Interiors Classic Boats Motor Boats Monthly Practical Parenting Bird Keeper

Why might IPC be an appropriate publisher for a new music magazine?
·       It may be an appropriate publisher for a new music magazine because it has a very long yet successful history in publishing all kinds of magazines, including music magazines. An example of a successful music magazine is NME, which has been running for almost sixty years.

What sorts of genres or music types of magazines might they be likely to publish?
·       IPC has only ever published music magazines with the genre of rock. This probably shows that they are only more likely to only publish this in the future. However, because they have only published rock, they may be willing to include other genres to attract an even wider audience that they already have.

Why might alternative publishers like Bauer be appropriate?
·       Bauer have published a lot more music magazines than IPC so might be able to appeal to a wider variety of people who listen to different to genres of music. Bauer magazines are also a lot cheaper than IPC, which means that C1, C2 and D, who are the main people who will be reading this magazines, will be able to afford them.
